Reasons Why Your Child May Need One-on-One Help in School

PARENTING CONFIDENT KIDS

As a parent, you want to make every effort to give your child the support they need. Sometimes children need more direct assistance and would benefit from one-on-one help. Understanding which situations might necessitate this can help you know when to look for that help.

Learning Disabilities

A child may be struggling in school if they have a learning disability that puts them at a disadvantage. Examples might include dyslexia, ADHD, difficulty understanding non-verbal cues, struggles with fine motor skills, and more. If you recognize that your child has a learning disability, you should take an active role in their schooling. You shouldn’t depend on the school to correct anything or take extra measures with your child.

Contact the school and ask them what they can do to help. Seek out tutors on your own. Show your child support by taking measures to help them work with their learning disability.

Speech Impediments

A speech impediment is any condition that prevents someone from being able to speak fluently, correctly, or clearly. They may be the result of physical or developmental issues. Sometimes a speech impediment may be caused by orthodontic problems. In most cases, speech impediments can be fixed. This is done through focused help from a professional. In some cases, you might be able to find help for your child through school.

However, you may also need to find someone to work with your child on your own. Having additional help to work on a speech impediment can help your child improve their speech and they can be better equipped to handle school.

Struggling in School

Sometimes kids simply struggle in school and it may benefit them to hire a tutor. There are plenty of signs that your child needs a tutor. Often, their grades will continually slip over time and they have a hard time completing assignments. You might also hear them talking about how they hate school or how it’s too difficult. Hiring a tutor to work with your child can help them address what’s impeding them. Examples might include a lack of organizational skills, difficulty focusing, or simply not understanding the subject matter. Getting this additional help can allow them to overcome their struggles and begin to improve.

There are numerous ways you can offer support to your child. Helping them get one-on-one help allows them to get the special attention they need in order to be successful in their schoolwork. This extra help will ensure that your child does not “fall through the cracks” in the educational system.
