Children are susceptible. Especially while in the adolescent years, your kids are likely to want to try new things and to succumb to peer pressure easily. Vaping is one activity you want to ensure they avoid. It can be a tough topic to talk about, but it’s important to do so in order to make sure that your kids have the best chance of succeeding in life.
Educate Kids When They’re Young
One of the best tools you can use to prevent your teenager from vaping is by educating them. Vaping’s potential damage to health is still not fully understood, but we are learning. Sharing what is known about vaping can help them to see that the negative consequences outweigh the momentary enjoyment you can get out of vaping.
Prepare Teens for Peer Pressure
You remember what it was like to be a teenager. You want to be cool and to fit in and be accepted. Unfortunately, sometimes teenagers don’t make the best decisions when they are in a group together. Talking to your teen about the dangers of peer pressure and what they can do when they feel uncomfortable or if a “friend” offers them a vape how being educated can help them be prepared if or when the moment arrives. They will also know they can talk to you if they get into a tough spot.
Be a Good Example
Even though your teenager might act like they don’t look up to you, they do. Setting a good example can help lead your adolescent down a positive path. If you were a smoker or a person who vaped in the past, be open and honest about it instead of defensive and angry. Your teen can learn from your mistakes instead of having to make their own in this case. Try to quit smoking if you do currently vape because otherwise, they will look at vaping as if it is okay since their parent does it.
Make Your Home a Smoke-Free Zone
We all know that smoking can have serious health impacts, but second and third-hand smoke is dangerous as well and makes your house an unsafe place for your teens. In order to better prevent your teen from smoking or vaping, make it a rule that no smoking or vaping is allowed inside the house or on your property in general. By enforcing this rule, your teen will be less likely to want to engage in this activity. Try to make sure that the adults who are coming in and out of your house are also on board with this policy, so it is easy to enforce.
Help Your Teen Quit Vaping
If your teenager has come to you about vaping, remember to respond with kindness. If they come to you, they trust you enough to ask for help. If your teen has been hiding it from you, try to understand that nicotine is highly addictive and scary, and your teenager’s brain is still developing. They need your guidance now more than ever. Being in your teen’s corner by supporting their journey to clean lungs is crucial.
Vaping is a serious epidemic. Being proactive against it is the best course of action. If your teen finds himself falling into nicotine’s trap, though, just know that you can help him quit and start life anew.
