Dangers to Children You May Not Be Thinking of in Your Home

PARENTING CONFIDENT KIDS

As parents, it is our job to keep our children safe from harm. But sometimes the dangers that exist in and around the home can be overlooked or underestimated. We’ll explore these risks and provide insight into how to protect your children from them.

Table Corners

Table corners pose a serious hazard for young children. Injuries caused by table corners can range from bruises, abrasions, and cuts to more severe lacerations and even internal damage.

As children grow, their curiosity leads them to explore their environment with their hands, often resulting in contact with sharp or hard objects such as table corners.

While these corners can often be well-padded or covered, it is important not to underestimate the potential for injury. Securing furniture with safety brackets or otherwise blocking access can help avoid these types of accidents.

Blinds

Kids are incredibly curious and energetic, so blinds around the home can pose a significant safety risk. Choosing cordless blinds is much safer for young children. Blinds look like fun playthings, but they can be very dangerous for young children.

The cords that operate blinds can easily become wrapped around a child’s neck or body, posing a strangulation hazard. Even if blind cords are kept out of the reach of children, the blinds themselves can be dangerous. If a child pulls on blinds too hard, they can fall or come loose from their mountings, potentially leading to injuries or even death if the blinds fall onto a child.

Carbon Monoxide

Carbon monoxide is a gas that can be very dangerous for young kids. It does not have any color or smell, and it can be hard to detect. If carbon monoxide builds up in your home, it can make you feel sick and cause headaches, dizziness, and even death. Make sure to always have working carbon monoxide detectors in your home so you know when there is too much gas present. One way to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning at home is to make sure that all fuel-burning appliances, such as furnaces and water heaters, are regularly inspected. Doing so can help to identify any potential problems before they become dangerous.

The possibilities for harm to children that may exist in and around your home may seem overwhelming. Remind yourself that a secure living environment does not have to come at the cost of a stimulating and engaging atmosphere for children; it is entirely possible for families to have an enjoyable home without compromising child safety.
